The major theme in "Smithereens" is the power of social media companies and their products' negative attributes, including addictivity. Scenes were shot roughly in chronological order, at Scott's request, and his inability to drive was a challenge for the production. Most filming took place in England, but Grace's scenes were filmed in Spain.
